Important Historical Events
In the late 5th century and early 6th, Clovis did several important things. He worked to unite the Franks, became the first king of France, and established the capital as Paris, which is still the capital today. These events were so important, he is sometimes referred to as the founder of France.
The Hundred Years War began in 1337 and ended in 1453, 116 years later. During the war, there were so many terrible tragedies. This caused a bittersweet victory.
On July 14, 1789, the Bastille, a prison, was stormed in France. This event overthrew the royal family and started the French Revolution. Today, July 14th is celebrated annually as Bastille Day. Technically, it is called La Fete Nationale. The day we celebrate is the year anniversary of the storming.
Napoleon's coronation on December 2, 1804 comes with some controversy. The story is that Bonaparte took the crown from the pope in order to make a statement that he is not under any one. Some say that this story is false, but we may never really know.
The Franco-Prussian War lasted from July 19, 1870 to May 10, 1871. It is significant because the German Reich took two provinces, Alsace and Lorraine. This action caused conflicts that continued in both World Wars.
