Early France
In ancient times, the Celtic Gauls inhabited what is now France. It was called Gallia Celtica, or simply Gaul. Not much is known about why they settled here. However, Europe was full of different groups of Celts/Gauls. It has been found that the groups were not genetically related.
In 507 AD, the Franks invaded and conquered the land with Clovis I as their leader. Clovis set out to reunite the separated Frank groups. The name France was derived from Francia which means "country of the Franks."

Population Pyramids
As you can see in the population pyramids, less babies were born in 2010 as compared to 1950. However, people were living longer than they were previously. This could be due to advances in medicine to extend lives and knowledge of birth control. (According to Gapminder, there seems to be a correlation a higher life expectancy when there contraceptive use.)
